He’e Nalu, the Hawaiian word for surfing originated in Hawaii and was a sport of
competition and ritual, which Hawaiian royalty used to maintain their power and
command over their people. These rituals were greatly affected by missionary
influences in the 1820’s, who believed that surfing and other sports were
hedonistic wastes of time. By 1890 surfing in Hawaii was nearly extinct. Luckily, in 1905 after New England
missionary influences began to decline, Duke Kahanamoku and his friends began a
surfing club and today are greatly credited for the revitalization of the sport of surfing.
